ABOUT SSN

Who We Are

An international coalition working to protect wildlife from the impacts of international trade.

A precautionary voice for wildlife at CITES

The Species Survival Network (SSN) is an international coalition of organisations committed to the promotion, enhancement and strict enforcement of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Through scientific and legal research, education and advocacy, SSN works to prevent the over-exploitation of animals and plants through international trade.

Our position

The benefit of the doubt goes to the species

SSN believes that international trade in wildlife should happen only when evidence shows that it will not harm the survival of the species, subspecies or population, or its role in the ecosystem.

Where live animals are traded, the risk of injury, damage to health or cruel treatment must be kept to a minimum.

When the evidence is uncertain, the species must always receive the benefit of the doubt.

Our network

Organisations from every CITES region, working as one

SSN coordinates the activities of conservation, environmental and animal protection organisations around the world to secure CITES protection for plants and animals affected by international trade.

Our members bring expertise ranging from conservation biology to legal analysis and public advocacy. They share news and information through SSN’s email list and WhatsApp group, and prepare for CITES meetings together.
