SSN Amphibian Working Group

Members of the SSN Amphibian Working Group share information from different geographic areas regarding amphibian trade, use, decline, and threats. In 2008, 43 percent of amphibian species wild populations were declining while 32 percent were threatened with extinction due to various threats such as habitat fragmentation, pollution, invasive species, disease, and international trade. The trade and use of amphibians as food, for medicinal purposes, and as pets are growing and are threatening the survival of several species. The Working Group strives to find measures to control and decrease harvest of species for international trade through enhanced protection under CITES.
