Decisions at CITES CoP16 will involve such high profile species as the African elephant, polar bear, Southern white rhino, hammerhead sharks and manta rays. The Parties also will be considering eleven proposals for adopting trade controls or increased protection for Asian and American turtle species and, a proposal to increase protection for the West African manatee. International trade controls for a record 136 tree species targeted for the timber trade are also to be considered.
Downlisting/delisting proposals will be considered for three crocodile populations, Ecuador’s Vicuña population, five plant species, and nine species of birds and mammals because they are now believed to be extinct.
