SSN WELCOMES NEW CITES SECRETARY-GENERAL JOHN SCANLON

21 April 2010 (Washington, D.C.) Today, the Species Survival Network (SSN) sent a letter of welcome to the newly appointed Secretary General of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

Mr. Scanlon was the Principal Advisor on Policy and Programme to United Nations Environment Programme Executive Director Achim Steiner.

In SSN's letter to Mr. Scanlon, SSN President Will Travers remarked that, "...each CITES Secretary General has left his own indelible mark on the Convention and the work of the CITES Secretariat." He further provided a general description of some of SSN's priorities for CITES work including enforcement and implementation of the Convention and the importance of science based information in the making of non-detriment findings.

SSN looks forward to working with Mr. Scanlon in the coming years to ensure that CITES plays the most effective role possible in the conservation of the world's wildlife.
